I just noticed a Google Ad showcasing the
Top 10 must have features in Windows 7. I caught my attention so I clicked it to find out what are the so called must have features for Windows 7, and to my surprise it wasnt very convincing to me, as most of the features in this top 10 is already available for Linux ( I am using Ubuntu 11.04 as a reference ).

Okay previously I wrote on things that
Ubuntu does better than Window . I taught I will expand the explanation on one of the points which I made, which is it's integration with the social web. This is one of the features I really love a lot since I am able to keep up my social networking, while not remaining on that website whole day.

I just came back from a mini-hackathon session with my friends at a local McDonalds near my house, mostly everyone there was around the age group of 20-30, and almost 50% of them were using Laptops. There were easily around 50+ people there, so I casually walked around spying at what people were doing with their laptops, and true enough most of them were just using their Web Browsers.

Sure a lot of people who install Linux and goes back to windows all use the same excusse, there is no games in Linux. Well technically they are only half-right, there is games in Linux, just maybe not the same quality as those which are available on Windows. Linux game makers / publishers can learn a lot from the Mac, specially when it comes to gaming, sure Mac OS X doesn't have much games too, but the games which they do have targets another market, the casual gamer market.

Well it is only around 40 more days till the next Ubuntu ships. Already there is tons of buzz around the internet about how good will be the new Unity Interface. Well while browsing the internet I have actually found some of the future mock-ups on Unity, it looks like it is a step in the right direction. Canonicle (t the company behind Ubuntu ) takes Linux and makes it Usable, just like how Apple makes BSD usable by creating Mac OS X.

With Ubuntu 11.04 just around the corner ( end of April ), I took a spin of the latest Beta 3 of 11.04 to check all what all the new features was all about. I must say I am quite impressed, then it came to me, I have been using Linux with Windows for aorund 3 years already, moving between those 2 systems. Yes there are somethings which Windows is still much better, but there are also some thing now Ubuntu is doing much better than Windows, here are some of the thing which Ubuntu does better.
Note: I am using Ubuntu 10.10 as a basis for this comparison, and not 11.04 with Unity as it is still in Beta, I might update this article next month once the full version is out.

You have heard those rumors floating around, that in the business world everybody uses Microsoft softwares, I am here to squash those rumors. I have been using Linux ( Ubuntu ) in my day job for already 5months now without any problems, and I don't need to go back to the other Operating System. The whole thing about the entire business depends on both Windows and Microsoft Office is a blatent lie.

I been using openSUSE 11.3 for about 2months already on my laptop. Yes there are somethings I love about it when compared to Fedora or Ubuntu, but there are also something which I disapprove of. I will save that for another time. What I noticed is that the traditional desktop that comes with openSUSE is getting a bit ... well boring. The normal gnome like desktop has not improved or changed much for years. Although openSUSE, ubuntu, Fedora, etc all have their custom menus, but that is the problem, it is only a customization for the menus and not the entire desktop.

Few months ago I wrote my musings
here on how Ubuntu can improved their software center, one of it was to include an App store where people can purchase commercial / paid applications. Ubuntu 10.10 Software Center comes with 1 app already ready for sale.

Yup it has been a sad week in for FOSS, most of the members from OpenOffice.org project have announced the creation of The Document Foundation, and a possible fork of the current OpenOffice.org making it LibreOffice. OpenOffice.org is one of the best office suite that FOSS has produced, it is sad to see that Oracle cannot see this.

Are you just a user of open source software? Do you wish that you can contribute something back to the community? Well contribute is not always just code. There are many ways to contribute. For Ubuntu there is one nice way how users can contribute ideas which may be implemented in future versions of Ubuntu. All you need to do is use Ubuntu Brainstorm, here is how.

From 9.10 to 10.04, there was a UI change in the Netbook Remix edition of Ubuntu. (Particually the removal of the right side panel which acted as shortcuts to folders in the home dir such as documents, pictures, videos, etc). Now 10.10 is on the Horizon and change is in the air.. yet again.

Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mint, etc are all great Linux distributions, but there is a way to get desktop linux adoption even higher, which is to forget about WINE and focus on Mac Emulators.
