TheStar newspaper is very old fashion

The Star ( one of our local newspapres here in Malaysia ) is serious old fashion. Sometimes I start to think if it is runned by dinosaurs or something. Here is an example of why I say so.

I was just browsing my Facebook friend feeds when I notice something that caught my eye "RM4mil stolen within first 3 months " so I clicked it.

What is worst, it took me to the Star Online. What i saw shocked me, they are asking us to buy the star for the full story ? Yea to helping sell more dead trees. Already the star online is one of the few news websites who don't use comments ( I also don't know why, maybe they are afraid or something ) and have tons of adverts, yet they still need to pull stuff like this ?

Makes you wonder if the star is going to be stuck at old ways of doing business for a long time or not.

Competitor Analysis - It is always important to know your enemy

Competitor Analysis is an important part of the strategic planning process. It is also a process that can lead to more sales or growth for any organization. Some businesses think it is best to get on with their own plans and ignore the competition.Take a look at microsoft would be a prime example, on how they ignore all competition of Internet Explorer, and now they are rushing to catch up.

U Mobile : First Impressions and Problems makes it looks like it sucks

I recently just got a new phone, so my old one is now my spare. I decide to put an extra Sim card in it so it can be my backup line, I tried U mobile cause I saw their advertisements and flyers around a lot, so I though okay no harm giving this a try, however I was so wrong, U mobile got to be one of the worst telecommunication provider in Malaysia. Here is my first impressions / reviews of their "wonderful" service.

Social Media experts - everyone seems to be one

From attending few conferences, siminars and even surfing the web there will always be someone who claims he or she is a social media expert. Gary vaynerchuk seems to sum up might taughts as his website. ( What he says is 99% of social media experts are clowns ). I been seeing a lot of young people ( Age 20-35 ) jumping on the social media bandwagon with little or zero marketing experience--not to mention a lack of social media management skills or any campaign track record. And yet they call themselves "social media experts" giving siminars, getting huge contracts, etc.

Startup Metrics for Pirates - Explained

According to Dave McClure there is five key stages in any startup which are Acquisition, Activation, Retention, Referral, and finally Revenue. I am going to explain my understanding of his theories for those who are still blur.

How to Calculate Dropout Rate for your website / app

As the title says, this is just a way I came up with on how you can calculate the dropout rate of people who come / use your website.

Tips on How to share SAYS.my / SAYS.com campaigns

On of the ways most of the youths in Malaysia earn some extra pocket money is by using SAYS.my and sharing commercial campaigns across various social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Blogs, or perhaps even that new Google+. I noticed there some people who are still in the dark on the best practices on how to garner the most clicks possible on their campaign links so hence I decided to write this small mini-guide.

When software is used to lie - Malaysian Local Newspaper doctors photos ?

There has been many speculation among most Malaysians how the Main Stream Media like Television and Newspapers ( which are also Government owned / linked companies ) always have bias reporting to ensure the current government is in good light all the time. Whether that is true or not, I leave it to you to decide, but I found this image online, that was published by one of our Local Newspapers, Berita Harian on their website ( I am not sure if it was publish in their daily today as I don't read it ). The picture seemed to be a doctored one.

E-mail replies - SMS Style versus Formal Robotic Style

Hey I had an interesting discussion with a collegue of mine at work today on how should we handle e-mail replies. The way I currently do it is the SMS Style, aka the short, blunt and to the point method, however some people like my friends have pointed out to be to use more formal robotic style, aka the normal way companies send you e-mail where the beat around the bush, try to be your friend and you just might figure out what he / she is trying to say.

Maxis Communications Rejects Social

By chance today, I stumbled upon Maxis Communication ( one of Malaysia's Largest Telecommunications provider ) 's Facebook Wall. It seems they were in the process of rejecting social media. Today afternoon, I noticed their wall have disable user's posting, and just an hour ago I noticed the whole discussion forum is gone. I remember yesterday Maxis was teasing users about a whole new social experience, well I think they misunderstood what the world social means, since to me it seems that Maxis only wants 1 way communication on Facebook I guess.

Depending on Facebook too much for your website

I been working on a couple of projects over the last 1 year, and everytime I present my project someone will ask me to include a Facebook login for easier access, okay this isn't so bad, I don't mind doing this, but when they ask me to make a website 100% dependent on Facebook I seriously think they are mad.

Using technology to ensure accountability

Okay this is going to be one of my first personal postings related to political events happening in my country Malaysia. I normally like to avoid writing this which are controversial and focus more on technology related stuff, but the buck stops here. I am going to write about how to use technology in the upcoming BERSIH 2.0 rally to ensure accountability from all sides, police, civilians, etc.

Karma is a bitch, specially to Microsoft

Me being an indian I always believe in the concept of Karma, I believe that whatever we do upon others will eventually come back upon us. Here is why I believe that Karma is now being a bitch to Microsoft.

TheStar newspaper is very old fashion

The Star ( one of our local newspapres here in Malaysia ) is serious old fashion. Sometimes I start to think if it is runned by dinosaurs or something. Here is an example of why I say so.

Facebook Fan Page likes value ?

I seriously think that brands are raping facebook, some brands are on Facebook just for the sake of being on Facebook ( then they can claim that they know how to use Social Media ) but now I really am getting the feeling the Facebook Like system is getting worthless.

The Internet and Web doesn't belong to Microsoft

I recently got into an arguement with someone on Facebook on the topic of PHP on Windows vs on Linux, I tried to be as neutral as possible but it the end that person was being such a Microsoft fanboy that I have to throw him some solid facts that even he can't deny.

If TM Net can fail to implement E-mail, what about smaller companies ?

Well over the last few days all over the malaysia local news media there was talks about the government's annoucement of providing e-mail to everyone over the age of 18. While the idea itself may mean well, but I ensure you it is anything but that. Anyways forget about politics or corruption for a while, that may be some of the reasons on why this project was implemented but it is not the main reason. The main reason the government needs to create this E-mail is because the internet service providers ( ISP ) failed. Why I say so ? just read on.

First Look : Ubuntu 11.04 Software Center

The Ubuntu Software Center ( USC ) has always been known as a package manager done right for the average user since it's debut. Last version of Ubuntu ( 10.10 ) they were some enhancement made to the USC but nothing ground breaking ( or perhaps it was, since it was the time they introduce Paid applications in the USC. depends on how is your view on this ), this version ( 11.04 ) however, there is a boat load of changes to the USC, hence why I will be giving a visual tour of it.

Lotus Symphony - Alternative to OpenOffice.org / LibreOffice

Most of you already heard about OpenOffice.org community members forking the project and making it into LibreOffice, everyone news and blog related to open source has been discussing this topic all week long, so I taught I will do something different, I will show you guys the Office Suite that I use on a daily basis, and trust me it is no OpenOffice.org or even LibreOffice, it is Lotus Symphony by IBM.
Office Suite, Lotus Symphony, Microsoft office, LibreOffice, OpenOffice.org

Opera Web Browser should be Open Source ?

I have been thinking about this, seeing the recent Web Browsers market share, it looks like the browsers which are trashing Internet Explorer's market share has 1 thing in common, they are both open source ( Google Chrome and Mozilla FireFox ). Apple's Safari hasn't been making much improvements in terms of innovation, but not in terms of market share so I will leave this out of the discussion. What I have been pondering about is should Opera Web Browser adopt the open source model ?

How can people fall for this ?

Google ads is great, it helps people who own websites have a way to earn money. However there is 2 things which I don't get about Google Ads is that how can Google allow certain ads which are obvious scams. Second thing would be how can people be stupid enough to fall for it. ?

Support Linux Game Development - Buy the Humble Indie Bundle today

I always said that Linux gaming should target a different market, the casual game market, but Linux users need to show that there is a market for game markets ( doesn't matter if casual or even hardcore gaming ). I missed the humble indie bundle 1 and even 2, and regreted not getting a chance to get some wonderful games at such a great price, which is pay how much you want. Now it is back for round 3, and I suggest all Linux users out there to show your support.

Linux just as good as Windows 7 - Mythbusting a Windows 7 ad

I just noticed a Google Ad showcasing the Top 10 must have features in Windows 7. I caught my attention so I clicked it to find out what are the so called must have features for Windows 7, and to my surprise it wasnt very convincing to me, as most of the features in this top 10 is already available for Linux ( I am using Ubuntu 11.04 as a reference ).

This is why I hate using Windows Live / Hotmail

I recently switched all my important e-mails over to the GMail platform, Microsoft's Windows Live and Hotmail platform  just do it for me anymore. I can't justify this with proof, but from my experiences, my GMail account gets much less spam compare to my hotmail account. Also, here is a picture explaining clearly why I really hate Windows Live.

TM Net Streamyx throttles all torrents

TM Net ( or probably TM Nut as known by the internet / blogging community ) has always been accussed for limiting peer-2-peer downloads like torrent with the excusse that it eats up into other people's internet speed. So they implement something called a "Fair Usage Policy" that says they only limit heavy downloaders, but seriously I don't believe it one bit. It is a load of bull shit.

Hmm is it worth it to set up Free Wi-Fi at your Restaurant ?

Yes I am very lucky almost every place around where I live offers free Wi-Fi connection, I can easily take my laptop everywhere and still manage to get online. Few days ago I wrote about my experience of going to McDonalds over the course of the last 6 months. Today, I went over to McDonalds again with a friend of mine, and notice something which got me thinking, is it really worth it to give free Wi-Fi to your customers ?

Things Ubuntu Linux Does Better - Integration with Social Web

Okay previously I wrote on things that Ubuntu does better than Window . I taught I will expand the explanation on one of the points which I made, which is it's integration with the social web. This is one of the features I really love a lot since I am able to keep up my social networking, while not remaining on that website whole day.

Perfect World - MMORPG running under Linux

Normally when people tell me use wine to emulate a Windows software/game, I think in my head "Nah it won't work", or "It is going to be to complex to configure" etc. Somehow I have been proven wrong by my good friend. I managed to get to run Perfect World - Malaysia under ubuntu with ease to a level which it is playable. ( Only a few graphic bugs I need work out ).

Microsoft's tries to buy Windows Phone 7 fans in Malaysia

I was just browsing the web searching my normal technology news and notice an Google Ad to win a Free Windows Phone 7. I caught my eye cause it was a local advert for Malaysia, something which HTC Malaysia was sponsering. I taught, why not, lets see what this contest is about. So I clicked it. and went to see what it is all about.
Windows Phone 7, Malaysia, Facebook, Contest

Hmm I am going to say it again, the Browser is the most important

I just came back from a mini-hackathon session with my friends at a local McDonalds near my house, mostly everyone there was around the age group of 20-30, and almost 50% of them were using Laptops. There were easily around 50+ people there, so I casually walked around spying at what people were doing with their laptops, and true enough most of them were just using their Web Browsers.

Linux Gaming - Needs a new target market

Sure a lot of people who install Linux and goes back to windows all use the same excusse, there is no games in Linux. Well technically they are only half-right, there is games in Linux, just maybe not the same quality as those which are available on Windows. Linux game makers / publishers can learn a lot from the Mac, specially when it comes to gaming, sure Mac OS X doesn't have much games too, but the games which they do have targets another market, the casual gamer market.

Unity Interface - A brand new Look for Linux

Well it is only around 40 more days till the next Ubuntu ships. Already there is tons of buzz around the internet about how good will be the new Unity Interface. Well while browsing the internet I have actually found some of the future mock-ups on Unity, it looks like it is a step in the right direction. Canonicle (t the company behind Ubuntu ) takes Linux and makes it Usable, just like how Apple makes BSD usable by creating Mac OS X.

Web Browsers you probably never heard before ( For Ubuntu )

Well everyone knows about the top 4 main web browsers, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox, Apple's Safari, and Google Chrome. Safari is only available for Windows and Mac OS X, where Internet Explorer is only available for Windows. Now I taught I do something different, instead of talking about any of those 5 browsers, I am going to do a showcase of some of the other browsers (mainly the unknown ones), which are available under Ubuntu.

Things Ubuntu does better than Windows

With Ubuntu 11.04 just around the corner ( end of April ), I took a spin of the latest Beta 3 of 11.04 to check all what all the new features was all about. I must say I am quite impressed, then it came to me, I have been using Linux with Windows for aorund 3 years already, moving between those 2 systems. Yes there are somethings which Windows is still much better, but there are also some thing now Ubuntu is doing much better than Windows, here are some of the thing which Ubuntu does better.

Note: I am using Ubuntu 10.10 as a basis for this comparison, and not 11.04 with Unity as it is still in Beta, I might update this article next month once the full version is out.

Ubuntu / Linux in working environments

You have heard those rumors floating around, that in the business world everybody uses Microsoft softwares, I am here to squash those rumors. I have been using Linux ( Ubuntu ) in my day job for already 5months now without any problems, and I don't need to go back to the other Operating System. The whole thing about the entire business depends on both Windows and Microsoft Office is a blatent lie.

Animated TV-Shows no more for small innocent children

Okay yes time to tell you guys a big secret, I watch cartoons. Yes I said it right, I really do watch some animated TV shows weekly ( or what some would call them, Cartoons ).  Yes some would say that this is only for small kids and it will be weird people above the age of 15 even bothers with it. I am here to tell those people to go screw themself, just because you don't like something doesn't mean other people shouldnt enjoy it. The Article below is my justifications on why Animation TV Shows are no more for the sweet and innocent ( aka the small kids ).

6 Hour Web Start-ups now Possible

I found this video on youtube, which shows the possibility of have a web-start up just under 6 hours, using open source technologies such as Django and Rails.

YouthSays rebranded to SAYS.my

I am always happy when local websites are successful, one good thing about it is there is less traffic going out of the country hence decreasing our need to buy international bandwidth. YouthAsia, a web company here in Malaysia, currently runs two local websites, one is SAYS.my ( www.says.my ) and one more is Groupon Malaysia ( www.groupsmore.com  ). YouthSays ( www.youthsays.com ) now just went through a rebranding with a host of new features to become SAYS.my ( as I mentioned in the URL above )

Pay as you use - A model of the past and why YTL / Yes.my is doomed

Last month, YTL lauched a new "4G" service in malaysia, which they claimed suppose to be the best and the next big thing. Yea it is the next big thing alright, the next big flop. I was thinking P1 was bad, but after seeing Yes.my I can conclude that they ( P1 ) is much much better compare to this piece of shit.

Gaming in Linux - Good for Casual Gamers and Developers of Casual Games

Well the one thing people from Windows when the jump ship to Linux they always complain that Linux has no games, some of them even dual boot Windows and Linux because of this reason. This has got me thinking sure Linux may not have Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age: Origins or many of the other triple A titles in Windows, but how many people actually play those. Remember Farmville and Mafia Wars, that simple browser game, how many people are playing it ? Certainly more people compare to those playing those triple A games. We can even see this trend in the mobile market. Casual games are dominating. With the rise of casual games, I taught it was a good opportunity for me to check out the casual games available in Linux. The results is staggering.

Traditional Desktop Interfaces going outdated ?

I been using openSUSE 11.3 for about 2months already on my laptop. Yes there are somethings I love about it when compared to Fedora or Ubuntu, but there are also something which I disapprove of. I will save that for another time. What I noticed is that the traditional desktop that comes with openSUSE is getting a bit ... well boring. The normal gnome like desktop has not improved or changed much for years. Although openSUSE, ubuntu, Fedora, etc all have their custom menus, but that is the problem, it is only a customization for the menus and not the entire desktop.

Microsoft's Youtube Fanbase

I was for fun simply watching Microsoft online videos about Bing, and I noticed they recently uploaded a new video:- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5HFz_eKWag , what was funny was the number of views this video got.

10 Predictions for Open Source in 2011

Hi everyone, it is the new year so I taught I will start it with a perdiction for the year in FOSS and other open source related materials. The list I am doing is in no particular order. The reason however why I am doing this list is because every other website is doing perditions in everything from IT, to security, and even to economy trends, but very few to none are doing stuff about open source related topics.

Blogging and Advertising - Nuffnang

I have no problems with blogs who have advertisements as everyone wants to earn a bit. Heck even mine does. But what I started to noticed majority of blogs are no more about "opinions". Many bloggers have started to sell out just to make a few bucks on the side.

This Week In Linux

Okay this time I am going to do something different, I am going to introduce you to one of my Youtube friends, most of the community just calls him Jordan. He has been making Linux News videos for already 1 year+. If you are interested in staying up to date about the happenings in the FOSS / Linux world, I recommend you subscribe to his channel.

Contribution to Open Source - Feedback and Improvement Suggestion Tool

Well, I have been on the FOSS scene for nearly 2 years or more already. I realize I am no different than most regular people who are on it also. Most of us are just users, we are hardly contributing, so I have decided to start an open source project with my good friend. Here is a wild idea that I have.

People actually fall for this type of scams

Here is an example of a scam I found while surfing the internet.

Useful Chrome Extensions

Here are a list of extensions (along with the explanation) that I use for Google Chrome which makes surfing web with Google Chrome much easier.

Easy Way to Manage Facebook Contacts

I don't know if you are like me, but I have too many facebook friends ( i know it is only 200+, but that is a lot for me ), and there are some people I add for the sake of adding, since I want to have contact with them, but I don't want to see every single update from them. There many ways you can manage this problem, but I found a nice way using a Google Chrome Extension, called Facebook Mural.

Microsoft Malaysia Lies yet again

Yes it has been heard before Microsoft spreads fear uncertainty and doubt ( otherwise known as FUD ) this is not an uncommon sight when one lives in the states but now it has come to Malaysia. Lets see what they are up to this time.

How smartphone users see each other, Android vs. BlackBerry vs. iPhone [COMIC]

What does the typical Android user look like? How are they seen by iPhone users? What do BlackBerry users think of iPhone users? Full comic after the jump. I think this guy did a pretty good job and it gave me a laugh. What do you think? Is it accurate?

The Magic of the Dabbawalas

Few days ago, I was lucky enough to attend a presentation at Hilton Hotel, PJ entitled “The Magic of the DabbaWalas”. Dabba means Box and Walas means person, but when you put both of those words together, it means Lunch Box delivery person. This presentation was about this dabbawalas in Mumbai (Bombay) India and how they (who consist of mostly illiterate people) delivery many lunch boxes everyday without using any form of technology and yet never make a mistake. Since it was interesting and there are many things I found useful I taught I am going to share it with you guys and girls. It is a story that we don't always need technology for everything.

Apple Announces New Mac Book Air

Have you heard the saying " It walks like a duck, it quacks like a duck, so it is a duck ", well apparently Apple didn't, for some time now they have been taking pot shots at Netbooks calling them low-powered PCs and saying no one wants them. Now Apple is release a smaller version of their MacBook Air, which surprise surprise looks like a Netbook. So in Apple's case "It walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, but it is not a duck cause we told you so". Read on to find out more about their new device.

What does Social Networking mean for Maxis ?

Social Networks are a double edge sword for most companies, if you know how to use it, great, your brand image improves, but if you just join for the sake of joining like my favorite punching bag, Maxis, it only tarnishes the brand even more. What did social networking (facebook in particular, I won't bring up twitter just yet) mean for Maxis? Read on to find out.

Installing Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic in Ubuntu using PlayOnLinux

Installing Windows-based games on Linux has always been a chore, but now with PlayOnLinux certain games ( mainly the famous ones ) can be installed with ease. Here is how I managed to install Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on Ubuntu 10.10 using PlayOnLinux.

Ubuntu's Software Center First Purchase App

Few months ago I wrote my musings here on how Ubuntu can improved their software center, one of it was to include an App store where people can purchase commercial / paid applications. Ubuntu 10.10 Software Center comes with 1 app already ready for sale.

DropBox - Cloud Computing File Storage service made Easy

I have been using DropBox for over two years already. Yea, I am still using the free service because I am cheap, but it has been such a useful service, that I have it install in all my PCs, Laptops, Netbooks and even my Smartphones. I will try to explain what is DropBox, and why I find it so useful.

Celcom LEDC Symbian Version

Althought I gave most of my thoughts about this contest in the previous post, here. This is for those who are interested in the trying to take part.

Celcom is back with another LEDC Contest ?

Celcom just announced the League of Extra-ordinary developer challange contest for Symbian now. They can't even handle the Android development contest and now they want to handle a Symbian developer contest. Maybe it is because it is funded by Nokia they can do it better?

Adventures in IT: H4x0r work on Asus EeePC 1002HA

Finally after one year 3 months, my trusty Netbook gave in to my pressure. I guess I was too uber for it. This netbook has been with me all over malaysia, from north to south of Malaysia. I even took it overseas to places like Singapore (3 times already) and even India. (Yes, it even visited the Taj Mahal with me). Now we need to get down into the mystery on what finally killed it.

Adventures in IT: Kaspersky won't uninstall

Have you guys tried uninstalling Kaspersky before? Recently I bought a competitor brand of Anti-Virus the moment my license needed renewal, but to my horror I found out that it is almost impossible to uninstall Kaspersky.

Anti-Virus for Linux

Yes yes you may have heard that Linux doesn't need a Anti-Virus, it is secure, etc etc all that same old crap from hardcore fanboys. But for those who know better I have found a good and decent Anti-Virus for Linux.

More Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt from our favorite punching bag, Microsoft

Well as usual again Microsoft takes a swing at the free and open source this time with a video showcasing their flagship product, Microsoft Office versus one of the flagship open source software, OpenOffice.org. It will be interesting to see how this battle progresses when Oracle replies.

How to tell if a person is influential ?

Doesn't matter online or even offline, the number of friends a person has doesn't determine if he or she is influential or not. To be honest there is no exact way to tell if a person is influential or not, but there is a way to estimate it to some degree. Here I am going to discuss those very methods.

People actually believes Maxis marketing gimmick for Iphone4

Yes the Iphone4 launched about 2 weeks ago in Malaysia by both Maxis and Digi. I wanted to highlight something important which I think is another trick by Maxis to get more people suckered, do you actually think that Maxis is purposely keeping low stock of Iphone4? Lets put it this way, do you actually think a big company like Maxis doesn't have the capital to buy and stock Iphones4 ? Seriously if you actually believe that then I can say that you have fallen for their marketing gimmick.

Windows Phone 7 explanation and possible future

With all the news on open source operating systems like Symbian, MeeGo or even Android, I think it is time I talk about the underdog, and a non-open source one too. Well lets take a good look at Redmond's upcoming mobile phone operating system, Windows Phone 7 series.

A possible Future for OpenOffice.org

Yup it has been a sad week in for FOSS, most of the members from OpenOffice.org project have announced the creation of The Document Foundation, and a possible fork of the current OpenOffice.org making it LibreOffice. OpenOffice.org is one of the best office suite that FOSS has produced, it is sad to see that Oracle cannot see this.

How do you become an important FOSS player in Malaysia?

I have always been thinking, how does one become an important player in the FOSS scene. Well naturally I am thinking of how to do it in my own country, Malaysia. I recently wrote about how the Spirit of FOSS is dead here, this is more of an add-on to that article.

A stone beats Windows phone 7

I found this image while surfing XDA developers forums when they were discussing the weaknesses of the upcoming Windows Phone 7. Kinda funny.

If Facebook Existed Years Ago.

I am not the original creator of this piece but this is dam funny.

Poor suckers who bought Iphone4 from Maxis

Maxis has just launched their Iphone4, but as usual the company loves to make their customers unhappy. It seems that Maxis has not upgraded their systems for the data plan yet. So basically everyone who uses the data plan on their Iphone4 now gets charge RM0.02 / 10 kb. If you have an Iphone4 from Maxis you can dial *100# and check you unbilled amount under My account and watch the amount you owe Maxis. This is a problem as some people have reached their max charge ( example like mine is RM250 per line, ) and got their lines barred as their reached the limit.

Want to contribute to Ubuntu just with Ideas, here is how

Are you just a user of open source software? Do you wish that you can contribute something back to the community? Well contribute is not always just code. There are many ways to contribute. For Ubuntu there is one nice way how users can contribute ideas which may be implemented in future versions of Ubuntu. All you need to do is use Ubuntu Brainstorm, here is how.

What happened to Celcom's LEDC contest?

Celcom, one of the telecommunication providers in Malaysia recently hosted a contest called League of Extraordinary Developers ( or in this case it was called League of Extraordinary Android Developers, as the contest was to create an Android application ). So far almost a month after dateline of proposal submission, celcom has not gotten back to the developers who bothered to submit their proposal. I would know, I was one of them.

Fake Emails : Fake World of Warcraft emails to Scam you

Here is a sample of email that my bro keeps getting in his junk folder, I wonder which poor sucker actually falls for stuff like this. ( Best part is he doesn't even play World of Warcraft ). This is just for fun only.

The Spirit of Open Source and Software Freedom is lost in Malaysia

Yea anyone who reads stuff written by me knows I am from Malaysia. Anyones who knows me well also knows at times I am involved with a few Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) related stuff / community events. Over the last 2 years attending most of the events I can say that most of us don't really have the spirit for it. Here is my musings on it.

Every review offers 10 new guest reviewers the chance to experience a service or product firsthand. It's an avenue where opinions by people like you contribute genuine knowledge and experience to others who are excited to learn more.

Yea right, I am going to prove that it is all bull shit.

Maxis' New Strategy - Let's push the blame to the OEMs

Well everyone in Malaysia knows that Maxis is the most expensive Telecommunication Provider / Carrier in the country. It looks like they got a new strategy now, which is to push the blame to the OEM / Phone makers since it is highly unlikely the phone makers will do anything. Here I am going to give you an example of how they blame Nokia.

Why all mobile phone manufacturers should work towards a single mobile standard.

I recently had many discussion with a close friend of mine in real life about the topic above. He wrote a report based upon our discussions for a college project. I managed to convince him to allow me to publish his report online. Here is the outcome.

Pokémon Apokélypse: Live Action Trailer - Pokémon Apokélypse is a fan-trailer responding to the common trend of 'dark and gritty' reboots of popular franchises. An article about the production of Apokélypse will be available on Shogun Gamer shortly.

Why don't all Telecommunication companies make full use of IMEI number.?

I am sure anyone of you guys and girls out there who owns a smartphone has the same fear as me, which is losing it to a thief. There is a way to reduce this, but it will require all telecommunication providers to sit down and agree to a Open Standard. This mainly is to make full use of the IMEI code of the phone.

Don't Trust A Rogue

Amnesia The Dark Decent - another commercial game coming to Linux

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is a graphic adventure horror game by Frictional Games, who previously developed the Penumbra series. (the latter was also available for Linux). In a similar vein to the developer's previous games, Amnesia is an exploration-based adventure game played from a first-person  perspective. The player has no access to weapons, and they must use their wits to avoid or hide from enemies. The game also retains the physical object interaction used in Penumbra, allowing for advanced physics based puzzles

Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix changes the UI yet again

From 9.10 to 10.04, there was a UI change in the Netbook Remix edition of Ubuntu. (Particually the removal of the right side panel which acted as shortcuts to folders in the home dir such as documents, pictures, videos, etc). Now 10.10 is on the Horizon and change is in the air.. yet again.

Why we shouldn't could Nokia and Ovi out of the Smartphone race yet.

Well I am a fan of technology, and mostly into mobile technology. I am a fan of Ovi and Nokia in general cause they are the pioneers in many things mobile, eventhough the general public does not know about it. I have said this time and time again, that I believe in giving credit where credit is due and criticising where there are flaws.

MiniTunes - A good looking simple music player

I been trying find a suitable player for both my Linux Desktop and Netbook, most players. Kept jumping from one player to another, each with different reasons, some I don't like the interface, some I doesn't help me organize my music with ease or doesn't have the features I require (like Syncing with my phone) , etc etc. For my desktop I am already happy with SongBird, but SongBird is too heavy for my netbook. With MiniTunes however, I think I finally found a perfect music player for my netbook.

Android Market in Malaysia

For the past few months I been trying to push (of course not much success) the issue of the Android Marketplace exclusion from Malaysia. Yea there is so many topics in this very forum about how the phone is broken or not complete without the marketplace. Just search around the forum for with the keywords "Malaysia" in the official Android help forums and you can see tons of speculations about this problems. I taught I will highlight what is going on, just so most people will get the idea what is actually happening. Most of these info I have gotten by talking to some of the developers during Google DevFest 2010 Kuala Lumpur. Some of these statements are right from the horse's mouth.

Do you really think that broadband speed is improving in Malaysia, I certainly think not.

Social Networking causes addiction and is time consuming

I have reduced my gaming habits quite a bit over the last 2 years, I spend more time doing other stuff online compare to gaming, but there is a dark side to all these online stuff besides losing your privacy, it is also more time consuming then anything else.

Animated Desktop - Linux's version of Windows' Dreamscene

Here is a video I found which has a good tutorial on how to include animated wallpapers on your Linux Desktop, all credit goes to the author of the video.

Why is Intel / Nokia going to be on most Internet Providers Shit list

I have already showed you a demo of what Nokia and Intel plans to do with MeeGo operating system, some things will mimic Android and some are unique to itself, but the main thing that will determine the success and failure of MeeGo will be both Broandband and mobile internet.

Future of the Web, Part 2

Mac Emulator - The Savior of Desktop Linux ?

Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, Mint, etc are all great Linux distributions, but there is a way to get desktop linux adoption even higher, which is to forget about WINE and focus on Mac Emulators.

Warning to WiFi HotSpot Users, Everyone wants to Data Mine

Free Public WiFi Hot spots are becoming a common thing in Malaysia, heck even the small road side footstalls might soon have WiFi. But with all the WiFi hotspots around the country some have a darker side to them, one which you may not like.

Learning Institutions Web Development courses flawed

How many people who in college/university learn Web Development using Content Management Systems? I am sure there are a handful who do, but majority of colleges/universities all tend to teach web development using a certain company's tools/software.

How Sony can kill and dominate the mobile market

If you were to check the internet there are rumors going around that Sony is about to release a Phone using their Playstation line. I for one certainly hope they do but there are a few things which they can and should do in order to gain a significant amount of market share from others.

A Demo of Nokia's / Intel's MeeGo

Here is a video from Intel Developer Forum 2010 (IDF 2010) Beijing, which shows you the plan both nokia and intel has with MeeGo.

Reality distortion field at Microsoft

With more and more technology companies making headlines, it amazes me how much Microsoft becomes not needed. Yes, Microsoft is not going to fade away into nothingness, this is something I can fully agree upon, but they are 100% going to continue to lose market share to other companies.

Can Oracle provide a complete business solution like how Microsoft does?

Just last year the Oracle finally managed to complete it's acquisition of Sun Microsoft. With Sun under Oracle now I have a feeling that Oracle can finally start offering an alternative to Microsoft business solutions.

JavaFX, a future success or a predestined failure?

Lets first see what exactly is JavaFX. To put it simple, JavaFX is a software platform for creating and delivering rich Internet applications that can run across a wide variety of connected devices. The current release (JavaFX 1.2, June 2009) enables building applications for desktop, browser and mobile phones. TV set-top boxes, gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and other platforms are planned.

Microsoft Vision of the Future

The incredible presentation of future technologies in 2019, according to Microsoft.
Think about all of touch screen computers in real world. Can you imagine it?

You can see it how comfortable in everyday lifes.
By the way, I think it's hard to do that.
I know it's already 2009, and technology'd gone very fast.
But something still extremely hard to hapen in 10 years ahead
Like newspaper in the video.

Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu Keeps getting better and better

I just recently upgraded both my netbook and desktop PC to Ubuntu 10.04, here are some of my thoughts about their latest offering. Ubuntu keeps getting better and better.

Would you blame the tools or the developer?

Adobe is going to release Adobe Creative Suite 5, which has Adobe Flash CS5 in it, which in turn comes with a compiler which can compile your flash applications into native iphone applications. Followed by this announcement, Apple changed its iPhone SDK (software development kit) (also for Ipad and Ipod Touch development) license so that developers couldn't even submit programs to Apple that use cross-platform compilers, like Adobe Flash for example. This blocks all Adobe developers from creating applications for the iDevice family.

Trying to love Google's Android but also getting pissed off A LOT

My own handphone is a HTC Hero, which is a phone produced by HTC and runs Google's mobile Operating System, Android. I find Android OS giving much more freedom when it comes to development but also cages me out of it.
Here are some of the few things I HATE ABOUT ANDROID OS

Why telecommunication providers dont want you have good mobile internet ?

I don't know about the rest of the world, but since I live in Malaysia, I am going to be basing this on what happens in Malaysia. Smartphones are becoming an ever increasing thing in most people lives, just like how every tom, dick and henry owns a mobile phone in the present, every tom, dick and henry will be owning smartphones in the future. I am sure most tech-analysis will concur to this, hardly anyone will disagree.

What is replacing BitTorrent?

What is replacing BitTorrent? Read on to find out the answer, you will be amazed.

Are netbooks worth it?

I see a lot of people are talking down on netbooks saying it is too small to do any work.
Netbooks are a branch of mini notebooks, a rapidly evolving category of small, light and inexpensive laptop computers suited for general computing and accessing web-based applications; they are often marketed as "companion devices," that is, to augment a user's other computer access.

Google really supports Android?

I would like to thank Google, because of your ignorance and refusing to listen or even answer your customers you are officially on my shit list. Seriously, how hard is it to actually have a few people dedicated to answering people's question on your support forums. Your Android OS is becoming like most other Major linux distros where we need to depend on the community for the support compare to the company which is backing it up. Not there is anything wrong with that, for me since I am quite tech-savvy I dont really mind, but you will not be attracting the mass market.

Another anti-competitive move by Microsoft

I am sure by now most people would have heard about the new Microsoft Office live, aka Microsoft Office in a browser. Lets see how cool it is.

What Computing Students Need to know

On September 16th 2009, I gave a talk in APIIT College on "What Programmers Need to know?", well I taught I will share what I did for that talk as I think it might be useful for people after graduation (mainly targeted towards computer science students). I kinda changed the topic, from what programmers need to know to "What Computing Students need to know"

The "Great" Internet Explorer 8

What I think about IE8, besides saying it sucks, sucks and sucks. Well frankly, IE8 is not as bad as say IE7 or IE6, but IE8 has the inherited the same dam problem that the previous IE's all have, which is following standards. Currently all other major browsers can get 100/100 for Acid3 test (Opera, Safari and Chrome) with Firefox a little behind with 93/100, but IE8 is only 20/100.

Browser is getting more and more important for Kids

Well maybe for people like me, when google showcased is new "OS", which just turned out to be the Chrome Web Browser sitting on top the Linux kernel, I was skeptical about the whole thing. Sure, I do spend most of my time online compare to anything else I do on my computer, but also I am a bit of a gamer, so once in a while I do dwell into a good offline role-playing game (Mass Effect, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Fable: The Lost Chapters, etc etc). So I almost was one of the few people who taught Chrome OS was CRAP. (I repeat ALMOST). Then it got me thinking, most of my cousin's who come to my place, (I got a big family, I got many cousin age 12 of below) always ask me if they can use my computer and ask me launch a web browser. (of course they normally ask for IE, but I always give them Chrome or Opera, depending on my machine). They always go to these websites (pulled it off my history):

Online Gaming in Malaysia is just dead…

2 years ago, I was playing an online game called Perfect World ( http://www.perfectworld.com.my ), it was a unique game for malaysians such as myself due to the fact that it wasnt only meant for Malaysians and Singaporeans but it was the first english version of perfect world that even people from overseas such as Europe, North America, etc can connect and play with us. First 3-4months in that game I really had a blast, I made some good friends from all over the world, from places such as Finland, Sweden, Spain, India, Australia, Singapore, America, South Africa, Portugal, etc. It was really a unique experience to mix with people from different culture and race in a single game.

Gaming In Linux

Sometimes people tell me that Linux has no games and thats why they stick to windows base systems, well while that statement itself is not really true since there are tons of games for linux base systems just not the commercial ones which are available for Windows. There are a couple of whys and wherefores behind this predicament, one being that when developers create game for Windows they use the directX technology as a way to render the graphics for the game while most unix base system are using OpenGL base technology. You may wander why is it that developers you DirectX stuff when it locks them to a certain platform, well for that you need to see the strong arm techniques applied by Microsoft back around the time of 2000. Most software game vendors were all gulled into believing that DirectX was the right and the fastest way to develop games, but what they didnt know is once a game is developed using DirectX it stays lock into the windows platform, since it will use all the runtime libraries.

Future of the Web

I normally give this presentation on what the web might be in the future, so far I have giving it at APIIT college at 16th September for MixOnCampus 09 and also on 15th November at BarCampMelaka 2009.

Web Browser Wars at BarCamp Melaka 2009

This is a summary of one of the presentations I did at BarCamp Melaka 2009 at Multimedia University which took place on the 14th and 15th of November. The topic of my presentation is as stated above, I was quite lucky that my session got over 50+ people out of the 170 people who attended the BarCamp.

IT Magazines and Newspapers in Malaysia

I am starting to get real pissed off at majority of IT Magazines and Newspapers that I buy every month. Most of them claim to give reviews or professional opinion about technology but all they are doing is sucking up to companies. I picked up the november issue of Max IT, a local magazine for technology, they were covering the release of Windows Mobile 6.5, and praising it, even to the extend of saying it comes with the best mobile web browser free of charge. The next page had a coverage of windows 7 launch, and that one was saying we should thank microsoft for giving the first 700 copies of windows 7 at a discounted rate. The way the author handled this two articles, clearly showed that he was being very bias towards both softwares, it was not an honest write-up. Then I began to check other articles in the magazine and found most of it were...well marketing articles.

Musings - Ubuntu Software Center

Ubuntu is one of the Linux distributions which is constantly improving. I am a late Linux user, I only started since Ubuntu 8.04 and Fedora 10. Even at those versions I found Linux not that difficult to use as some people deem it so.
