Using technology to ensure accountability

Okay this is going to be one of my first personal postings related to political events happening in my country Malaysia. I normally like to avoid writing this which are controversial and focus more on technology related stuff, but the buck stops here. I am going to write about how to use technology in the upcoming BERSIH 2.0 rally to ensure accountability from all sides, police, civilians, etc.

We have all heard many stories before how people who hold candlelight virgils in Malaysia are stopped by the police, and anyone video-tapping such events will have their camera's confiscated and later returned with the video deleted. Whether this is true or not, I don't know and I don't care, however if it is true we should be prepade.

With the rise of smartphones like the Iphone, and the various Android phones, or even the business-like Blackberries almost every young person ( or even those in Urban areas ) has a smartphone a long with Data plans. We should use this to our advantage, use the full power of the smartphones. So this is why I am going to recommend Qik.

Qik, is a service which one can record videos from his/her Smartphone and it is instantly broadcasted to the net. You can check if you phone is supported here and watch the video embedded below to find out how it works.

Why is the reason I suggest this? Well lets all have a backup plan just incase anyone tries anything funny during the 9 July rally, at least we will be having proof, plus we can also broad cast to our friends and supporters who can't attend the rally. So even if your phone get's destroyed ( I hope that doesn't happen of course ) or even if someone confiscate it, the video is already up there in the cloud / web.

Also, if your phone doesn't support Qik, you can always use Facebook, which upload every picture or video you take as soon as you take it.
