How Sony can kill and dominate the mobile market

If you were to check the internet there are rumors going around that Sony is about to release a Phone using their Playstation line. I for one certainly hope they do but there are a few things which they can and should do in order to gain a significant amount of market share from others.

Below is a drawing of the patent filled by Sony almost a year ago, it confirms that they do have something in the works.

Here are a few things I think Sony should do:-

  • Have an online store for software distribution - The software is of course not only games but also other stuff like social applications of productivity stuff. This is the same thing they are doing with the PSP-Go.
  • Open up the store to everyone - Make the Software Development Kit available for free and allow almost anyone to make games/software and submit it to you guys. The more software/apps you got the more attractive your phone becomes.
  • Sell old PS1 game for cheap - Remember those 3000+ old Playstation games which can run on PSP, well maybe you should contact the developers and come up with an agreement, like selling each game for 5-10 USD. You know how many people will be willing to kill to play Final Fantasy 7 or even Crash Bandicoot all over again? All these games are not selling anymore I am sure developers won't mind selling them for cheap, (maybe Sony 30% and Developer 70%), might as well make some money than no money at all.
  • Ensure a long battery life - Make sure the phone is able to run at least 2-3 days without the need of being recharged. The current PSP for a gaming device has great battery life, but certainly not enough for a phone.
  • Don't remove buttons for a Full touch-screen - Sure touch screen is nice and all, but gaming is more fun with buttons, of course Sony can include both buttons and a touch-screen, as maybe some new games can utilize it (like Plants vs Zombies maybe)
  • Link your Sony Music collection - You can easily allow people to listen to music online or download it at a relatively cheap price (or maybe free like what Nokia does with ComesWithMusic )
  • Make development easy - Don't try to make development for this hard, allow almost anyone to develop for it, doesn't matter if it is a bedroom coder or a full-fledge company. Don't become like Google which only allows people from certain countries to develop stuff for Android, dont be like Apple who controls it strictly, and certainly don't be like Microsoft who doesn't consider other platforms. Allow people like Adobe to create development tools maybe, (Adobe AIR anyone?).
  • Target a niche market - Sure this product wont be for business, it won't even be for old-people, but it certainly will sell to kids, pre-teens, teens and young adults, they crowd which is always into new technology stuff. Target these markets should be good enough.
  • Open up the Operating System - Basically do an Android, open up the OS, let people develop for you and innovate. You might get your updates regularly and more faster than ever.

Above are just some of my thoughts, I just wish the CEO of Sony does this.
