Broadband is still not improving

Do you really think that broadband speed is improving in Malaysia, I certainly think not.

For over 10 years the Streamyx 1mbs package pricing has remained one of the hottest used packages of broadband in the country but the pricing is still almost the same of what it was 10 years ago, most people still paid RM88 (or 99 if you want with modem) for Streamyx 1mb. If we take a look at most other countries, specially our neighbouring ones like Singapore, most of them have higher speed for cheaper prices (even after we convert the currency).

It was really a sad day when the Prime Minster announced that the new High Speed Broadband (HSBB) will be affordable for all Malaysians and when the pricing was shown, the cheapest package is RM149 for 5mbps / 60gb of data. I am on a 1mbps package and I easily use around 50-70gb of data per month. I think if speeds increase I would be watching even more higher resolution movies online and I could finish up that 60gb in a week.

I can come up with a perfect description for Streamyx vs HSBB, Streamyx is like a normal car with unlimited patrol, you can go anywhere, back and forward how far you want, just at a slower speed, while HSBB is like giving you a ferrari and only giving 1 tank full of petrol and asking you make due with it.

Streamyx and HSBB aside, even our mobile broadbands are shit, all are charging crazy prices. Just look at Maxis, Digi and Celcom (granted that Digi is currently trying to reduce their prices, which I praise them for, but their coverage still needs improving) all charge quite high rates for 3gb of data per month.

I seriously want to build nice web applications for both the desktop and mobile phones, but the problem is I already know very few people will be making use of it as the broadband penetration is too low and too expensive.
